One of the common denominators in the risk of developing coronary artery disease appears to be chronic inflammation from a variety of causes. I have previously reported on the cardiac risk indicator called CRP, or C-Reactive Protein. This is only one general indicator of inflammation, but its presence in high amounts is more closely associated with heart disease than cholesterol. Other information is coming out about specific associations of chronic infections, such as gum disease periodontal infection Chlamydia pneumoniae; Herpes simplex virus; cytomegalovirus CMV and Helicobacter pylori associated with stomach ulcers ; , with arterial disease. The common denominator may be the high levels of CRP. This protein may not be just a marker for arterial disease, but it now appears to directly damage the lining of the arteries. High white blood counts, another sign of infection, are also associated with increased mortality from heart attacks, and with less response to the clot-busting medications. Piracetam cannabisFrom stimulation to no stimulation without their knowledge. Another strategy is to use ineffective stimulation parameters without the patient's knowledge. The studies strongly indicate that the efficacy demonstrated in larger open-label clinical trials is an effect of deep brain stimulation and not a placebo effect. The largest study 6 included 134 patients who received either subthalamic or globus pallidus deep brain stimulation, which was turned off and on without the patients' knowledge in a crossover fashion. The primary outcome measure was the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale motor examination, which demonstrated a 51% reduction or improvement P .001 ; with stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus and 33% P .001 ; with stimulation of the globus pallidus in the off-medication state. Improvement was seen across nearly all symptom categories, and improvement over baseline scores was statistically significant, with the exception of gait and postural stability in patients receiving globus pallidus deep brain stimulation. A more telling statistic is the increase in the "on time" without dyskinesia with deep brain stimulation. Parkinson patients cycle through three states: "Off time, " in which the patient is experiencing parkinsonian symptoms On time with dyskinesia, in which the parkinsonian symptoms are relieved but the patient experiences significant or disabling dyskinesia On time without dyskinesia--"quality time" for patients. Both globus pallidus and subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation resulted in a doubling of on time without dyskinesia. In s REFERENCES and piroxicam. Ospitals are supposed to be places where sick people can go to get well. Instead, all too often, they are places where sick people get worse and very sick people die in pain and despair. They're also places which make hundreds of millions of dollars for medical and pharmaceutical companies. Although there are individuals working in hospitals who are at least wellmeaning if misguided ; , the main purpose of most hospitals today is to be profit center for huge health care conglomerates. Administrative and medical decisions are frequently made on the basis of economic advantage, with little attention paid to the needs of the patients or their families. Worse yet is the fact that many hospitals, particularly those in rural areas, have become the repository of medical personnel who were unable to sustain private practices. Death rates at some of these hospitals have been so high that they have spurred government investigations. Yet, we flock to hospitals in record number, thinking that we'll find humane and proper health care. We should, instead, heed the advice of most health care advocates: stay out of the hospital at all costs.

Abstract Within a psychotherapy development research project, thirty male 50% ; and female 50% ; personality disordered outpatients receiving methadone maintenance were randomly assigned to receive one of two 6- month manual-guided individual psychotherapies, Dual Focus Schema Therapy DFST ; or 12 Step Facilitation Therapy 12FT ; . All participants met diagnostic criteria for at least one personality disorder with antisocial, borderline, avoidant, and dependent being the most common. There were no significant differences between the two therapies for retention, utilization, or reductions in psychiatric symptoms or psychosocial impairment. Both therapy conditions demonstrated significant reductions in various severity indicators. Participants demonstrated more rapid decreases in the frequency of their substance use over six months of DFST in comparison to 12FT. DFST also was associated with a stronger therapeutic alliance between therapists and participants. Contrary to predictions, 12FT demonstrated better reduction of dysphoric affect than did DFST. DFST shows initial promise as the first time-limited manual-guided psychotherapeutic approach for the full range of personality disorders encountered in substance abuse patients.
